Emergency! Emergency!

— benway @ 22:03

Holy crap! There seems to be some horrible problem with illegal immigration affecting the Arizona counties bordering Mexico.

Arizona Governor Janet “I am Governor, hear me roar” Napolitano has declared a state of emergency in Cochise, Pima, Santa Cruz and Yuma counties, pledging $1.5M in state emergency funds to combat the impact of illegal immigration from Mexico.

Napolitano’s announcement follows three days after Bill Richardson, Jackass Party Governor of New Mexico, declared a similar state of emergency in his state’s border counties.

Does anyone see a pattern here?

Let’s backtrack. Napolitano opposed Proposition 200, limiting state benefits offered illegal aliens, refusing to direct state agencies to enforce some of its provisions. She’s painted those opposing illegal immigration such as the Minuteman Project as racist vigilantes. She’s cozy enough with the leftist Hispanic factions (yes, I know that all Hispanics are not leftist) that she’s taken to wearing a Che t-shirt. What could possible have lit a fire under her (jack)ass?

Answer: politics – orders from on high.

DNC party operatives have decided that if the GOP dominated federal government can’t solve the illegal immigaration problem, a problem that an awful lot of voters seem to care about, then its time for the Democrats to come out as the party with the plan.

The DNC is absolutely correct – the GOP has sat on its wrinkled hands on illegal immigration. However, the DNC has welcomed illegals with open arms (and welfare checks). This is unprincipled politics on both sides, and both parties should hang their heads in shame.

Napolitano has clearly fired the first volley on the immigration issue, sure to be the number one issue in the 2006 gubernatorial election. What’s going to follow is the Jackass version of cracking down on illegals: a crackdown on businesses employing illegals, whether they know it or not, combined with an attack on the secondary problems caused by illegal immigration like drug trade, property damage, petty crime, littering, etc. Napolitano and the Democrats can do nothing meaningful: doing so will undermine their leftist Hispanic base.

The 2006 elections are going to be interesting. I wish I weren’t going to be affected by them.
